Heart of Mine

pink white and red heart stone lot

By: Catherine Berry

Oh, heart of mine, why are you stubborn?
You simply do not obey my commands at all.
On some days you lift me to soaring heights,
But on others you cause me to crash and fall.

I try to control you: to hold you in check,
Yet it seems there’s no taming your spirited voice.
You choose what you will; you go where you want,
How selfish of you to not give me a choice.

You divide my emotions, like winnings from a lottery,
A little bit there, a little more here.
You share my love with those who can’t accept it.
Your uncontainable fire brings me both joy and fear.

I admit you have potency; I concede to your power,
You fight like a soldier, with no plans to surrender.
Determined to persist until the battle is won,
Until you find the person with whom I can settle forever.
