“Do You Ever Want To Fly Away?” by Kiera Fisher

Acrylic paint on tar paper.

Academic achievement is marketed as the Holy Grail, but for students, pursuing school-based measures of success can feel like straining ourselves to the breaking point. This piece depicts a fellow classmate in my Drawing and Painting class who I see all the time, but know nothing about. On this day he looked solemn and sad as he was drawing, and so I created this. To me, this piece is all about how some students cope with stress – through daydreaming and imagining you are in your own little world. In this case imagining you are flying away on the back of a paper airplane- floating away from all your worries.

I experimented with unconventional ways to apply the layers of acrylic paint, first covering tar paper with white primer, then using paper towel to blot on more paint. After applying paint it was scratched away with a metal nail, continuing this subtractive method for line drawing and hatching to create texture.
