“To Nick Holonyak Jr, Father of the LED light” by Mouse Moseley

Did you dream of a bright bright new world
alight with a clean white glow within
the darkness you were born into?
1928 was not an easy year,
right before the recession and Hoovervilles.

Were you mad with fever in 1961
as the Berlin Wall rose up and up
and the bay of pigs refused to be felled?
Another war in your lifetime,
so many wars in your lifetime.

Did you picture your light
as something utterly monumental,
the solution to short-lived orange shimmer
dimand dim and dimmer.
Did you picture Gabriel with his horn:
Let There Be Light.
You are the creator.

Did you think of your invention
wired into a Lexus in 2007
changing the soft warm overcast
of my childhood so slowly, but forever.
Each Domino’s Delivers or Padiddle
marked with a seven pointed astigmatism
rather than dim orange shimmer
fading into yellow, getting dimmer, dimmer.

And when the oncoming cars come
full-throttle down the rain slicked highway–
Hark!
Nothing but blinding white.
