“Living in the Night” by Edwina Dessaint

It was 12am
When everyone was fast asleep.

It was 1am
When she heard her neighbors arguing again.

It was 2am
When she decided to try and fall asleep.

It was 3am
When she realized what was wrong.

It wasn’t the loud noises,
Nor was it the fact that she was afraid of what’s in the dark.
Or demons coming to hurt her…

No.

It was the time when she finally realized that,
She could relax.
She didn’t have to have the world on her shoulders,
Criticizing her for everything she did.

She could feel her mask falling,
With all her emotions falling with it through her eyes.

She felt relieved and could do her own things.
Since everyone’s asleep,
No one can say anything to hurt her.
She was genuinely happy.

It was 4am
When she realized it was wrong.

She shouldn’t have to rely on the night
Just for her to feel at peace,
just for her to feel alright.

It was 6am
When the sun started to rise.

She fell asleep praying for God to protect her,
And bless her with better days.

It was 12pm
When she woke up again.

And it was 3am
When I was really me.
